30th June, Arrived to Paro international Airport and transfer to Thimphu (55km approx. 1.1/2 hours’ drive): The flight to Paro is one of the spectacular in the entire Himalayas. Whether flying along the Himalayan range from Kathmandu or over the foothills from Kolkata, the journey offers fascinating view and an exciting descent into the kingdom. Bhutan’s gift to you as you disembark from the aircraft will be cool, clean fresh mountain air. After immigration formalities and baggage collection, you will be received by guide and driver from Fly to Bhutan. After lunch visit National Museum this was actually the Watch Tower of the Paro Rinpung Dzong and later it was converted into National Museum in 1968. And visit Paro Dzong. And towards evening drive to Thimphu, the capital town of Bhutan with en-route stops at Chuzom, and the confluence of the Thimphu and Paro rivers. 1st July, Thimphu (Attending Vajrayana Buddhism Conference) - After breakfast you will attend the meeting. Bhutan under the auspices of the Centre for Bhutan Studies & GNH Research will focus on the issues of continuity and change within contemporary expressions of Vajrayana Buddhism. This conference will address issues of tradition and innovation as Vajrayana engages the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Panelists will range from Bhutanese and Tibetan Lamas to neuroscientists, academics, and international scholar-practitioners who have adapted Tantric Buddhism’s methods of individual and collective transformation to the priorities and concerns of the 21st century. 2nd July, Thimphu (Attending Vajrayana Buddhism Conference – Sightseeing) - After breakfast you will attend the meeting. Later visit Thimphu Tashi Chho Dzong, Memorial Chorten: this particular Chorten was constructed in 1974 as a memorial for the third King of the country, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is widely regarded as the father of modern Bhutan. You will also get an opportunity to get a glance of Bhutan’s national animal known as the Takin at Mini zoo; this is an extremely rare member of the goat family, found in herds in the very high altitudes (13,125ft and over). They live on a diet of grass and bamboo. Buddha Point, this place is perfect to take in some truly breathtaking views of the entire city of Thimpu, visit Changangkha Lhakhang, and visit Handicrafts Emporium where one can buy Bhutanese textiles and other arts and crafts. 3rd July, (Morning Conference of Vajrayana Buddhism and evening drive to Punakha) - After breakfast you will attend the meeting. The three-day, publically-engaged series of talks and presentations will address Vajrayana’s historical and contemporary interface with the visual and performing arts, as well as its dialogue with 21st century medicine and science. Presentations will emphasize Vajrayana’s long history of creative innovation within wider processes of continuity and change and the current globalization of Himalayan Buddhist culture. The conference will specifically address the role of body-mind yogic practices within Vajrayana Buddhism and their applicability within increasingly technology-driven, transcultural world. Towards the evening drive to Punakha the route pass through Dochula (3140m, 10362ft) from where a beautiful panoramic view of the Himalayan mountain range can be seen, especially in clear winter days. 4th July, Punakha – Paro (Sight-seeing) - Visit Chimi Lhakhang (temple of fertility): This temple was built by Lam Drukpa Kuenley (The Divine Madman) in 1499. Visit Punakha Dzong, the former winter capital and present administrative scat of the district. The Dzong (fortress) lies between two rivers, the Phochu and Mochu, uncaring male and female rivers. It was built in 1637 AD. Visit Wangduephodrang Dzong, perched on a promontory 13 km away from Punakha which is under renovation. The Dzong was built in 1638 A.D. In evening we will drive back to Paro. Overnight at Hotel in Paro (Tenzinling Resort/ Metta Resort/ Rema Resort and Namsay Chholing Resort.
5th July, Hike to Tiger Nest - A very special day, with an excursion to view the spectacular Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) monastery. After breakfast a short drive takes us to Satsam Chorten, from there a 2 hr. walk till the viewpoint of the monastery. The trail climbs through beautiful pine forest, many of the trees festooned with Spanish moss, and an occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. We stop for a rest and light refreshments at the Taktsang Jakhang (cafeteria) and then walk a short distance until we see, clearly and seemingly within reach, Taktsang monastery. The primary Lhakhang was built around Guru Rimpoche’s meditation cave in the 1684 by the Penlop of Paro Gyaltse Tenzin Rabgay; this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, flew here on the back of a flying tiger, Dorji Drolo, said to be his favorites consort and evening walk around Paro city. 6th July, Departure - Early breakfast you will check- out form the hotel and then drive to the airport to board the flight. Your escort from Fly to Bhutan will assist you with exit formalities and bid you farewell.
